The lifeblood of the label and package printing industry was on full display at the most recent TLMI Annual Meeting. As part of the event, converters are recognized for their award-winning work, which we are proud to display in our final issue of the year. The awards serve as a reminder of the cutting-edge labels being produced in shops around the country.

This year’s awards were a who’s who of winners, as prestigious companies like McDowell Label, an RLG Company, Hub Labels, Inland Packaging, Label King, and many others were honored for their efforts. While L&NW goes to great lengths to highlight the latest and greatest products, we must remember that converters are using these tools to deliver for the biggest brands across the world.

We often talk about the hottest topics in the industry like automation, digital printing, sustainability, and so forth, but the converters are the ones living these trends. My favorite part of this job has always been the Narrow Web Profiles (turn to page 41) because I can see the technology in action. Converters essentially welcome us into their homes and showcase their secret sauce. But beyond technology, they highlight their culture and what makes an effective business. The newest press only goes so far without the service and the people to put it into practice.

Ultimately, the people make this industry great. They’re the ones gambling on robotic automation or a new digital press, especially with the economic uncertainty that looms over the next decade. Many converters are currently exploring whether they should invest in digital printing; does the technology make sense for their book of business? TLF Graphics, featured in this month’s Profile, agreed that it did – 25 years ago. President Robert McJury had to make that calculated gamble, and the move paid off. Today, TLF Graphics is one of the leading converters in its region. Those successful gambles are the stories we love to tell – and our industry is full of them.

TLMI also recognized numerous individuals who have played a pivotal role in our industry’s growth. Robert Parker, president, Label King, has been named as the Converter of the Year, while David Ellen, divisional director, Domino Digital Printing Solutions, received Supplier of the Year honors. Tailored Label Products’ Tracy Tenpenny has posthumously been named the Volunteer of the Year. Meanwhile, John McDowell (McDowell Label, an RLG Company), Tara Halpin (Steinhauser), and David Ellen (Domino) have also been recognized for their service to the TLMI Board. Not only are many individuals gracious with their employees and customers, but they are also selfless in promoting the growth and health of the industry as a whole. We truly believe that is worth celebrating.
